Mining operations can be divided into large-scale mining (LSM), small-scale mining, and artisanal mining. The size of the operation and the type of the equipment determine the nature of mining. Generally, large-scale mines are characterized by deep underground operations, vast open pit operations, high-tech equipment, high health and safety standards, and are run by multinational companies. In contrast, artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) is characterized by a lack of sophisticated equipment, irregularity, disorganization, poor health and safety standards, and low productivity.

 

ASM employs over 40 million people in 80 countries, with another 150 million people indirectly benefiting from it. This is in comparison to 7 million people directly employed in LSM operations worldwide. Despite its socioeconomic significance, the sector has a poor reputation due to a number of inefficiencies attributed to a lack of expertise, organization, and government support.
